No-exam life insurance

Who gets approved for immediate underwriting, what the procedure includes, and what happens when you don't qualify.

An increasing number of insurers provide immediate underwriting: for applicants within specific age and benefit limits, they make decisions based on application data, prior prescriptions, driving history and other records instead of a paramedical exam. Some approvals happen within hours. Each quote on this platform indicates whether the product requires an exam, may require one, or doesn't need one.

What it changes

Avoiding an exam doesn't eliminate the underwriting review. The company validates your statements, and a policy issued based on misrepresented facts can be cancelled during the initial two-year period. If the insurer's investigation uncovers concerns, they may require an exam or testing; you'll have the choice to move forward at that stage.

Who tends to qualify

Usually those below age 60 requesting coverage up to the insurer's accelerated underwriting threshold, with no significant medical issues and zero tobacco usage in the past year or longer. Several carriers will review recent lab results from a doctor's visit instead of ordering new testing.

When an exam is needed, it typically involves a thirty-minute appointment at your home or workplace within Ontario, performed by a paramedical professional and paid for by the insurance carrier. A complete exam can occasionally help you qualify for a better rate, so it's not always disadvantageous.
